Jay’s Jayburgers (Closed)

by · Comments (0)

3/10/07 Sadly this institution closed. If you are hankering for burger, though only half as good, try the nearby ퟙOriginal Tommy’sퟘ on Vermont street.

The sort of place you’d expect to dine side by side with Philip Marlowe (or Jim Rockford). No atmosphere, (actually this place barely has walls), but a good burger, nonetheless.
What To Order: chili burger, burger with fried egg, strawberry soda

Arthur’s Coffee Shop

by · Comments (0)

Fresh orange juice, Arthur’s OJ, Burgers. Counter service, to go and even drive-through window service.

Though at one time, the Arthur’s in Orange was affiliated with this one, don’t be confused between the two. The Arthur’s in Orange is mediocre at best, has a completely different menu, and very sloooow service. A separate review is pending.
What To Order: Fresh OJ, BLT and Egg sandwich

Falafel King

by · Comments (0)

Great falafel sandwich. What is a falafel? Try it first then ask (hint it’s vegetarian). Also try the Tahini and hummus dip, middle eastern salad sampler, shwarma.

They have a second location in Santa Monica. They tried a location in Orange County, but sadly it closed in the Fall of 2001.
Best Dish: Falafel sandwich
What To Order: falafel sandwich (I like mine with avocado), shwarma, salad plate

The Raymond Restaurant

by · Comments (0)

A jewel in the outskirts of Pasadena. Located in a charming historical craftsman style cottage, The Raymond serves up innovative California cuisine. The menu changes weekly and on my recent visit featured mushrooms baked in phyllo pastry, roasted chicken on greens with avocado and papaya, pan fried chicken in dijon mustard cream sauce with impeccably cooked and flavorful green beans, carrots and rice. Though souffl

Lima Virreynal Peruvian Restaurant

by · Comments (0)

I believe 80% of the best food in America is served in from a strip mall. Lima Virreynal is a prime example, located in a run-down strip mall just off the freeway. Outside a dreary parking lot, inside a hospitable retreat from the LA freeways. They offer most of the familiar Peruvian dishes except one of my favorites, Aja De Gallania, but I still managed to have a wonderful lunch. The Papa La Huiciana, sliced potatoes with a mustardy cheese sauce is excellent.

The Peruvian Salsa proved perfect for dipping french fries and bread. You can tell a great South/Central American restaurant by their Chili Verde, and so it is with Peruvian Salsa – I really like the one served here. For my entrees, I had a linguini with salsa verde and chicken, and Sudado de Maricos – shrimp in a tomato broth. The restaurant is clean, the decor is modest and the service is excellent.

I have only been here several times, and am certain to return soon. They are conveniently located just one block East of the 605 Freeway, a perfect reprieve on my southerly drive home from Los Angeles.
