D’Amato’s Restaurant

by · Comments (0)

Sometimes you just luck out and dine with the right people at the right time at the right place with the right server. Tonight it all came to together a wonderful spot in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. A suburb of Detroit. What could have been an ordinary Italian meal turned out to be a extraordinary experience. Apps included perfectly done flash fried calamari with zesty marinara sauce and a dish of bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and fresh buffalo mozzarella. The later was served on fresh, hearty hand cut toast with a touch of olive oil, basil and garlic. A tasty white wine flight completed the first courses.

By now we already appreciated the professionalism and guidance of our waiter Brad, but he kicked up the service throughout the rest of the meal with intuitiveness and guidance seldom experienced by me. Let me explain. A friend and I were discussing the idea of one of us getting the lamb chops with basil pesto risotto, creamy basil sauce and marinated oranges and the other getting the chili rubbed Ahi tuna with basmati rice and arugula salad. Almost forgetting to order salads, we decided to order family style and choose the arugula salads with Laura Chanel chevre and an order of the green beans with a salad of mixed greens. Our waiter Brad surprised us with stealthily serving small plates of each salad to each diner. Additionally, he produced plates with equal portions of lamb chops and ahi on each.

Featuring a great wine list with a selection of half bottles, and varieties by the glass, D’amato’s is a great space with great food and wonderful service. Enjoy!

Alternate spellings: Damatos D’amatos

What To Order: Featured wine flights – a great value

05-01-01 A tiny place that attracts hordes of locals. Eat at the counter or one of a dozen tables. I’ve only been here once, but be sure I’ll get there again, with friends in tow (so I can try some of their dishes). Try the broiled calamari, sautéed mussels, or any of the pan fried fish.

12-09-06 This is my 10th visit now and it still is one of my favorite places to dine alone or with friends. They have two locations now, both in Philly.

The official waiting area is across the street in a neighborhood bar. You can also buy bottles of wine here to take to dinner, which is quite handy since Dimitri’s is BYOB.

Redbones

On your first visit, order the ퟙCharred Plate of Meatퟘ, or as the menu calls it ퟙThe BBQ Beltퟘ. Served with slaw and beans, you will get a heaping sample of brisket, St. Louis Ribs, Memphis Dry Ribs, and Texas Ribs and Arkansas style ribs. If you are afraid your friends will be worried about you when they see you poised over your plate, a plate piled with nearly a foot high of flesh, then choose to sit downstairs where the mood is just right for enjoying wonderful BBQ in solitude. All meats are tender to the bone, and full of flavor. If you wish to add more sauce, you have a choice of hot, mild, sweet, and vinegar. Get a couple and have a food orgy, a couple of sauces that is.

Redbones also has sandwiches, BBQ chicken, Steaks, grilled shrimp, grilled fish, and some selections for vegetarians. I seldom have room for desserts but if you can manage choose from pecan pie, sweet potato pie., caramel custard or something called ퟙwhite trash sundaeퟘ.

My favorite sides are the Corn Pudding and the Dirty Rice. The hushpuppies are tasty with a requisite dipping in any of the BBQ sauces. You can also choose from more then a dozen other sides including fried okra, corn fritters, onion rings, fries, collard greens and candied yams.

If you like beer, ask the downstairs bartender to share the ퟙBeer Rolodexퟘ, with listings and descriptions of dozens of brands, many from microbreweries.
What To Order: Any of the BBQ, fried Catfish, corn pudding

Union Oyster House

by · Comments (0)

Originally named the Atwood and Bacon Oyster House, established in 1826, this is America’s oldest restaurant. Don’t let the long waits at peak hours sway you from dining at this institution of perfectly prepared seafood (as I write this I am craving a crock of Oyster stew.)

I enjoyed the succulent lobster scampi (prepared lazy man style), grilled scallops, steamers (clams), and Boston baked beans. For a treat, sit at the Oyster shucking bar!

For those land lovers they also serve an ample variety of chicken and beef dishes.

Tangerine

by · Comments (0)

Serving their own interpretation of traditional Moroccan dishes, Tangerine makes for a great evening. Tangerine has a wonderful selection of starters and lots of vegetarian dishes. Order the crab cake in pastry ($16.50)

and the lobster risotto ($18.00). My favorite entrees where the Duck Tagine ($18.00) and Couscous. The Tagine are Moroccan stews and are served up at Tangerine full of exotic flavors. The biggest disappointment is the absence of my favorite Moroccan dish, Bistella.

Diners are greeted by a contemporary interior worthy of a tourist attraction. Sister restaurant to the widely popular Buddakan and Metropolitan, also in Philadelphia.

Tangerine is expensive. Food is served family style and service is a bit slow at times.
What To Order: Couscous, and any of the Tagines (Moroccan stews)
