South Beach Grill

by · Comments (0)

Creative menu – sounds and tastes good. Many choices of appetizers, salads and entrees. Fish reins here, but they also have chicken, beef, and vegetarian dishes. My Grouper Linda was amazing – Pecan crusted and pan seared with abuerre blanc sauce. Cooked perfectly, the tastes melded together. Our knowledgeable and pleasant server was Amy.

After dinner take a short drive to the pier to take a stroll along the beach.
Best Dish: South Beach Nachos, Seafood Napoleon
What To Order: Try the Grouper Linda and the key lime pie!

A hangout to me would be a place just like this: friendly and efficient service, fair prices, festive and casual atmosphere and very good food. The sign says “Serving South Florida since 1966″, and I expect they will be here for many more years to come.

There are five Quarterdeck locations around Ft. Lauderdale. The one I tried is just a block from the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center. The menu includes an array of appetizers, salads, burgers, pastas, steaks, sandwiches and seafood. I started with conch chowder, which was prepared in a peppery red broth and full of conch meat, potato and peppers (I added a bit of Tabasco to mine – www.tabasco.com/ ). I followed with the combo of a half-rack baby back ribs, and grilled grouper fish sticks (served satay style, and not to be confused with Mrs. Paul’s). This excellent entree came with a choice of potato. I choose sweet potato, which came with brown sugar and honey butter – a thoughtful addition as was the pint of Yuengling beer (http://www.yuengling.com/).

I hear the dolphin fish and burgers are also worthy.

Siam House

by · Comments (0)

Siam House is a welcome spot for a quick lunch near the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center. Menu service is fast and efficient (they also have a lunch buffet). For lunch, I enjoyed fresh steamed shrimp dumplings and a bowl of wonton soup. Look for them in the rear of the center, with Hops Brewery across from Public Grocery.

Come Back Inn

Just a few minutes from the New Orleans airport in the city of Metairie. A seafood po-boy from this neighborhood sandwich shop is a great way to inaugurate each visit to the city. Dine in or to go.

Three locations in Louisiana.

A local New Orleans favorite that will ship seafood nationwide. They come from miles around to have boiled crawfish, barbecue shrimp, but their specialty is fried seafood, large portions of fried seafood.

Sylvia

06-01-07 Just heard that Sylvia’s in Atlanta is no more.

Don’t be turn off by the fact that Sylvia’s also owns a hair care company, for this soul food restaurant has it’s roots (pun intended) in Harlem where the original Sylvia’s has been serving up since 1962. Go with a group and order the family style dinner which includes heapings of delicious fried chicken, BBQ ribs, roasted chicken, corn bread, collard greens, gumbo, red beans and rice, candied yams, mashed potatoes and dessert.

Live entertainment completes the Sylvia’s experience. On my recent visit, regular Sharon Woodruff performed R&B hits and originals for the appreciating crowd.

Chez Philippe

An institution in Memphis, Chez Philippe is at home in the historic Peabody Hotel. The service is refined, but the food a bit over done on presentation, and less so on taste.
