Mumbo Jumbo

by · Comments (0)

American Bistro cooking with a southern influence. Dishes like Grilled Wild Sturgeon with black eyed peas and broccoli rabe, and donut holes with vanilla cream make the menu a a good read. The execution of the meals leaves something to be desired, but I would go here for appetizers and to enjoy the back room atmosphere.

Gladys and Ron

by · Comments (0)

One of the best places for fried chicken in Atlanta (only better place is Sylvia’s). Order the plate of chicken wings and waffles. Pour on some tasty chili sauce to add a little zing. Owned by Gladys Knight and Gospel singer Ron Wiman, and in my guess, has it’s roots in LA based Roscoe’s House Of Chicken and Waffles. (Warning: The lemonade and ice tea are so sweet your teeth may hurt)
What To Order: Fried chicken and waffles of course.

Mary Mac

Mary Mac’s is an amazing place, their business card proudly states ퟙA revival of Southern Hospitalityퟘ and it is just that. The service, food and environment is like stepping back in time. Like most Southern meals out, it is best to go with a group so you can enjoy the ퟙfixinsퟘ family style.

Pot likker is a must try and opens the palette for a true southern meal. Pot likker (a.k.a. pot liquor) is the vitamin rich liquid left after cooking greens or other vegetables.
What To Order: Fried Chicken, candied yams, pot likker

Uglesich’s Restaurant (Closed)

by · Comments (0)

01-01-2006 update: The owners retired in May 2005. The name lives on in a wondeful cookbook and other merchandise available through their website.

If you don’t believe that truly great food can be found in questionable places, you haven’t been to Uglesich’s. This ramshackle building, in arguably one of the worst neighborhoods in New Orleans, regularly has a waiting line that flows out the door and around the block at lunchtime. A variety of seafood specialties to fill your tummy.
