Renzo’s – a taste of Peru

by · Comments (0)

Renzo’s offers it’s take on Peruvian food to fit the local business crowds. Not always authentic, but always tasty. As an example, the beef Saltado had the subtle flavors but was served in a wrap. Ceviche, soups, and pork dishes are the things to order.

Open every day except Sunday. Check website for hours

Al Dar

Serving Lebanese cuisine in both a deli and adjoining full service sit down restaurant. I only tried the deli side, but enjoyed grape leaves, eggplant dip, and schwarma. Their housemade pita bread is excellent, as is their Lebanese style ice cream (gelato style). Also freshly made on premises. If you aren’t in the mood for ice-cream, choose any of their Mediterranean desserts – they have dozens of choices.

French 75

by · Comments (0)

This David Wilhelm restaurant has managed to replicate the successful formula of the Laguna Beach original and bring it to the burbs.

Start with a Kir Royale and enjoy French classics served with American Portions. The best dining advice here is to split portions. Try the Duck two ways, the Fois Gras appetizer, and any of the house made soups. Very good selection of wines.

Nice space with good acoustics. The main bar lounge is large and and always busy.

Now five locations in Southern California including Laguna Beach, Irvine, Burbank, Century City, and Newport Beach. *My favorite location is the original in Laguna Beach. Great bar. If you visit make sure you check out the Lost World ퟙmonkeyퟘ ceiling paintings.
What To Order: Happy hour drink and dinner specials

Taco Rosa

by · Comments (0)

Taco Rosa is the ퟙfine diningퟘ sibling to casual and innovative Taco Mesa restaurant. Go for lunch. The dinner crowd is noisy and the dishes blend together and less tasty then the lighter lunch menu. Do try the Mojita Margarita and the Platon De Botanos (steak nachos), carnitas, and any of the salads.

Hof’s Hut Restaurants

Rotisserie chicken, pot roast, tasty sandwiches, home style soups. For breakfast try some fresh orange juice, oatmeal and cinnamon toast.

Multiple locations.

Several locations have closed in the last few years, so check their web site before venturing out.

A tiny place that attracts hordes of locals. Eat at the counter or one of a dozen tables. I’ve only been here once, but be sure I’ll get there again, with friends in tow (so I can try some of their dishes). Try the broiled calamari, saut

Fleming

Living in California provides an opportunity to grill most any day of the year, so going out for a steak is mostly about the sides and the atmosphere. Good chains like Morton’s, and Ruth Chris serve up excellent ퟙmeat and potatoesퟘ at most any of their branches. Fleming’s is a small chain of 16 or so restaurants run by Paul Fleming of PF Chang’s China Bistro fame.

Go here to experience a decent steak with darn good sides. The steak selection is USDA Prime, and is offered with a choice of peppercorn or b

Angie

06-05-07 New Name: Flavios Italian Kitchen, same chef.

Angie is almost a legend in Orange County. Her generosity to charitable organizations makes a visit almost mandatory, luckily her food is tasty; making a visit doubly worthwhile.

Try any of the Italian standards such as chicken Tortellini, gnocchi, chicken parmigiana, or spaghetti and meatballs. Pizzas, pizzas and more pizzas – make up your own or choose unusual items such as Garlic Shrimp, or Chicken Alfredo. And finish up your meal with a homemade brownie.

Update: I have not been to Angie’s, since Angie sold her place. But Angie’s legacy continues with her recent journey to New York. After 9-11-01, Angie moved to New York and has become an ambassador of goodwill. Volunteering and cooking a night or two at every fire station in New York City is her mission and so far so good – she even pays for the groceries herself. If you want to support Angie and her cause email me and I will forward your outreach to her.
What To Order: Meatball sandwich, chicken alfredo pizza, chicken tortellini

Paul

Unlike many so-called sandwich shops, Paul’s Deli offers the real thing – a great selection and very good bread (to me, bread makes the sandwich.) Paul’s Deli also offers a large variety of housemade pastas, some of which are terrific. Daily specials and bargain prices. Same location for 20 years.
