Maki Sushi

by · Comments (0)

If you want fresh sushi this is the place to go. If you order Omakase, which is chefs choice, the sushi chef will often show you the seafood ퟙliveퟘ prior to preparation. If you choose Omakase, tell the chef your likes and dislikes, budget, etc. It is common for the meal to end with Torro (belly of the Tuna) so plan accordingly. The menu and sushi prices are fair and you can dine well for $ 30 per person. If you choose, Omakase plan to spend $ 50 to $70 per person.
What To Order: ퟙOmakaseퟘ which means Chef’s choice

LA’s classy diner. Gourmet diner food with trendy clientele and friendly service. Open late, and serving home style cooking with the finest ingredients. Here you will find staples such as liver and onions, thick cut pork chops and real mash potatoes, flat iron steak, grilled asparagus and other fresh vegetables and of course the staple that says American Diner – Meatloaf.

The house made deserts are always a crowd pleaser. Apple pie, chocolate cakes, pecan pie are all yummy.

Kate’s is open late and popular and a prime spot for star gazing.

Iwai (Noodle Shop)

by · Comments (0)

Noodle shops are very common throughout Japan and finding a good one is never difficult. Most are bustling establishments, primarily designed for standup counter or seated counter dining. Most are open late and are very economical. Don’t confuse the local places here the 50 cent packages of dried ramen you have in the pantry leftover from college – no sir, the noodle dishes here are prepared fresh for your order and served up piping hot. No silver foil flavor packets here. Broth will differ between establishments and be made from bonito, pork or chicken stock or a combination of these. One of my favorites are the dark, rich miso based ones. Noodles satisfy my appetite for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And I am not alone, as you will see happy slurpers lined up at counters throughout Japan enjoying this national dish.

Udon and Soba are types of Japanese noodles – Udon are wheat noodles and Soba, generally served cold, are buckwheat noodles. Ramen is a Chinese noodle, but very popular in Japanese noodle shops. English menus are rare at the independent or small chain shops. Ordering for me consists of pointing and knowing a few words in Japanese. Luckily on my recent trip I had my friend Nahoko to translate and order.

At Iwai, and like many restaurants in Japan the menu is limited to a several standard items and a special or two . The Udon is offered hot or cold in a broth, and also dry on a plate. You generally can order noodles with vegetable, beef, pork, or seafood.

On this visit we all ordered the same thing which was Udon served in a large bowl of broth with some vegetable bits. The flavor was good but needed to be doctored to become very, very good! The condiments offered include chili powder, sesame seeds, fresh ginger, and house made tempura ퟙcroutonsퟘ. Lunch included green tea, and a rice dish – a rice ball or a bowl of steamed plain or flavored rice mixed with vegetables was offered today.

Seating is limited at around 20 persons and half is community style at tables, which means you are likely to share a table with others. Unlike your typical noodle shop, there is no counter seating and the bustling is replaced by an efficient calmness. The decor here is contemporary, yet comfortable. I think smoking is allowed but I didn’t see anyone smoking.

Don’t’ burn your tongue!

Postscript: If you are hankering for top quality noodles and don’t have travel to Japan in your future, head to Mitae Ramen in Costa Mesa or Oshima Ramen in Denver for the next best thing here in the states.

South Beach Grill

Creative menu – sounds and tastes good. Many choices of appetizers, salads and entrees. Fish reins here, but they also have chicken, beef, and vegetarian dishes. My Grouper Linda was amazing – Pecan crusted and pan seared with abuerre blanc sauce. Cooked perfectly, the tastes melded together. Our knowledgeable and pleasant server was Amy.

After dinner take a short drive to the pier to take a stroll along the beach.
Best Dish: South Beach Nachos, Seafood Napoleon
What To Order: Try the Grouper Linda and the key lime pie!

Anaheim White House Restaurant

by · Comments (0)

Nestled between a burger joint and some small office buildings is the charming dining oasis known simply as the White House. Occupying an historic farm residence that was once surrounded by Orange Groves, the White House prepares creative and exquisite Italian and French dishes.

Chef Bruno is from Italy, so naturally the pasta and grilled meat and fish are done perfectly. On my most recent visit I enjoyed both and the Prada rack of lamb (New Zealand lamb, pan roasted with Italian cipollini and lamb jus) and the chef’s choice, pasta sampler which included four pastas (including gnocchi) and complimentary sauces. For appetizers their lobster ravioli, delicate pasta sheets filled with lobster and basil on a sauce of ginger and citrus, with crispy leeks was a palette pleaser, as was the best Caesar salad I had ever tasted (and I rarely even like Caesar salad), and the saut

The Lark Creek Inn

Spectacular food in a spectacular location. Most everything from the kitchen is worth trying – dishes liked seared ahi with spicy sesame vinaigrette, roulade of pork tenderloin on wilted spinach and Chanterelle mushroom ragu and potato gnocchi, rosemary roasted free range chicken on wilted spinach and Parma prosciutto with a brown butter lemon sauce, and of course their famous mashed potatoes!

Warm and friendly atmosphere and service, perfect for a client dinner or a romantic evening.
Best Dish: Mash potatoes
What To Order: Mash potatoes, warm chocolate brioche bread pudding, salad of heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella, marinated pork roast, rosemary roasted chicken

A hangout to me would be a place just like this: friendly and efficient service, fair prices, festive and casual atmosphere and very good food. The sign says “Serving South Florida since 1966″, and I expect they will be here for many more years to come.

There are five Quarterdeck locations around Ft. Lauderdale. The one I tried is just a block from the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center. The menu includes an array of appetizers, salads, burgers, pastas, steaks, sandwiches and seafood. I started with conch chowder, which was prepared in a peppery red broth and full of conch meat, potato and peppers (I added a bit of Tabasco to mine – www.tabasco.com/ ). I followed with the combo of a half-rack baby back ribs, and grilled grouper fish sticks (served satay style, and not to be confused with Mrs. Paul’s). This excellent entree came with a choice of potato. I choose sweet potato, which came with brown sugar and honey butter – a thoughtful addition as was the pint of Yuengling beer (http://www.yuengling.com/).

I hear the dolphin fish and burgers are also worthy.
