For lunch they serve all the expected deli choices. I enjoyed the turkey with cranberry cream cheese and their matzo ball soup. The soup hit the spot, but wouldn’t qualify as grandmas best. The sandwich with wax bean salad was outstanding and large enough to split.

Above is a pic of a cup of their matzo ball soup.

Their website is way overdone and difficult to use but lists locations and has menus to view.

I didn’t find time for any meals at Lori’s Diner on this trip, but all of my past experiences have been good ones. They serve tasty breakfasts and traditional diner food – burgers, patti melts, milk shakes and more. There are a few locations in San Francisco, including the SFO Airport so you are bound to bump into one. If you dining solo, the counter is the place to be. Some locations open 24 hours.

Barney’s Hamburgers

by · Comments (0)

Who doesn’t love a good burger? But jeeze louise it is hard to find a great burger. Barney’s serves an ok burger and offers lots of twists with add ons and condiments but I would not make this a destination. Instead head to the Apple Pan, just 2 miles away, if you are hankering for a great burger.

Ps: Barney’s does make awfully great shakes though!

Pacific Coast Hot Dogs

by · Comments (0)

If it weren’t for the perpetual line outside on weekends, it would be easy to miss the red and yellow hut that is PCH Hot Dogs.

All the dogs here are all beef Hoffy dogs and are cooked to perfection, always providing that satisfying snap. Try the Chicago Dog (celery salt, relish, mustard, tomatoes, pickles, and onions), PCH Dog (chili, mustard, onions, and cheese), and the Corn Dogs. They also have the expected sides like fries, malts and shakes.

PCH Hots Dogs is cheap, the service is fast and they are open every day.
What To Order: Chicago Dogs, PCH Dog, Corn Dog

In-N-Out Burgers

by · Comments (0)

Not a big secret in Southern California, but still my first choice for a good burger from a chain. Fresh cut french fries, and real ol’ fashioned shakes. Hands down the best service you will ever receive in a restaurant of this type.

I order mine Animal Style – patty coated in mustard, extra tomatoes, and grilled onions.

Locations in California, Arizona and Nevada
What To Order: burger, fries, pink lemonade

Jay’s Jayburgers (Closed)

by · Comments (0)

3/10/07 Sadly this institution closed. If you are hankering for burger, though only half as good, try the nearby ퟙOriginal Tommy’sퟘ on Vermont street.

The sort of place you’d expect to dine side by side with Philip Marlowe (or Jim Rockford). No atmosphere, (actually this place barely has walls), but a good burger, nonetheless.
What To Order: chili burger, burger with fried egg, strawberry soda

Smoky Jon’s BBQ

by · Comments (0)

My friend Al successfully proved to me that Madison has a variety of great foodie stops when he guided us to a rib feast at Smoky Jons. They were closing when we arrived so we enjoyed our rack of juicy ribs and tasty slaw, all enjoyed in a nearby park. Memorable.

They have accumulated over 30 awards for their BBQ – a definite stop on any road trip! As good as Corky’s? You decide.

Rodney’s Oyster House

by · Comments (0)

If I lived in Toronto this would be my hang out! Great food, a large variety of wonderful beers, friendly service, and a neighborhood atmosphere make this a true local favorite – just ask anyone for the name of the best Oyster Bar around (I did) and it will be Rodney’s. Choose from their chalkboard of fresh shellfish. With your fresh shucked feast you can also enjoy their selection of tasty condiments to enhance the natural flavors and clear out your sinus.

They claim to serve 6,000 to 10,000 oysters per month – that’s a lot of shucking.
What To Order: freshly shucked Malpeque Oysters from Prince Edward Island
