This American Bistro has valet parking and excellent service. You will find a good selection of standard fare here and some with a little twist. The steak and frites are quite good as are the flatbread pizzas. I enjoyed the proscutto and pesto flatbread, and rotisserie chicken entree. They have a large bar where you can order the complete menu, and a comfortable main dining room with decent noise level even when crowded.

Palomino has valet parking which is a must for Westwood. Check out their website for hours, happy hour specials, and more.

UPDATE: I just found out they are a national chain. We’ll award them extra points for being a chain and being damn good :)

Venticello Ristorante design is intimate and comfortable, with a kitchen staff that serves superior and innovative northern Italian cuisine. On this night we had a wonderful corner table by the window with a nice view of the bay to compliment our outstanding meal.

We were a group of four and created a virtual tasting menu featuring mushroom ravioli, roast lamb, gnocchi, pizza with arugula and panchetta. The wine list is diverse and compatible with most budgets. I found a 2004 Barberro for $ 42 which rounded out the meal. Overall, this spot is one of my new favorites in San Francisco.

Venticello is only a 5 minute cab ride from Union Square and, if the weather is nice, a great 15 minute walk. If you are walking, plan your route carefully if hills are not your friend.

The restaurant seats 115 but it’s design can accommodate various group sizes for private events and would be great for business dinners.

For lunch they serve all the expected deli choices. I enjoyed the turkey with cranberry cream cheese and their matzo ball soup. The soup hit the spot, but wouldn’t qualify as grandmas best. The sandwich with wax bean salad was outstanding and large enough to split.

Above is a pic of a cup of their matzo ball soup.

Their website is way overdone and difficult to use but lists locations and has menus to view.

I didn’t find time for any meals at Lori’s Diner on this trip, but all of my past experiences have been good ones. They serve tasty breakfasts and traditional diner food – burgers, patti melts, milk shakes and more. There are a few locations in San Francisco, including the SFO Airport so you are bound to bump into one. If you dining solo, the counter is the place to be. Some locations open 24 hours.

Brodard Chateau

by · Comments (2)

A few decades ago Garden Grove officially received the nickname Little Saigon to recognize the Vietnam influence on the community. One beneficial outcome for us foodies is the plethora of good Asian eateries, Brodard Chateau being one of the nicest ones.

This weeks lunch coincided with Chinese New Year which explained this shrine on display in the restaurant foyer.

The actual lunch was wonderful and included the mouth watering duck spring roll, shrimp crepe appetizer, and salt and pepper calamari. Next trip I would get the salt and pepper shrimp and bring more friends so I can share more dishes!

Border Grill

This place I really like – The southwestern menu is great, the atmosphere is casual and hip. The web site features information about the chefs, the restaurant, cookbooks and radio show. Also has a listing of upcoming special events at the restaurant with a recipe or two.

Chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger create the “world cuisine” featured at The Border Grill and their other restaurant, Ciudad.

House made Guacamole, Ceviche, and Green Corn Tamales are all great starters. Grilled Skirt Steak, Pork Chops and Pescado Veracruzano are mouth watering.

Zankou Chicken

by · Comments (0)

The standout dish here is the chicken tarna pita –

Sliced grilled chicken topped with garlic sauce and tomatoes. They serve decent falafel and shawerma (aka swarma), mutabbal and hommus.

For desert stroll two doors down to Assal Pastry which has every style of Mediterranean pastry known to man.

Ruth’s Place

Hit and miss. Ruth runs the place and appears to do all the cooking herself, which means, even in this strip mall location, she is challenged to keep all of the items fresh. Try the fried chicken, gumbo and yams.

Great service and food. The rib eye steak (Pittsburgh style) is about as good as it gets. They don’t take reservations for small groups, so if the wait is long try Jack Shrimp across the street.
What To Order: Roasted artichokes, spinach dip, calamari, steak salad.
