Consistent and flavorful middle eastern dishes. Casual atmosphere, inexpensive menu, and friendly service. Lunch special can’t be beat – falafel and shawarma and drink for $7.99.

Recommend the falafel (eat in so it’s fresh), stuffed grape leaves, and middle eastern style pizzas.

Serving al vapor tacos right from steam table. Gotta try em. I got one each – papas (potato), beef, and pollo (chicken). I tempered the hot (temperature wise) meal with the bottled house salsa.

Chez Marcel Bistro in Prague

by · Comments (0)

Chez Marcel is a small bistro in Prague with moderate prices. The menu features all the expected fare – for my dinner I had the Duck Confit with truffle mash potatoes. And though my intention was to have a simple meal, I couldn’t resist also trying the Foie Gras Poêlè (house made) so my light meal turned into… well, a not so light one. A glass of Rosè rounded out my first meal in Prague.

Notable features: credit cards accepted, pleasant service, and a no smoking section in the upper deck of the restaurant.

Renzo should give seminars to other strip mall spots on “how to run a restaurant”.  Just pick most any lunch spot – franchise or independent, in most any town, and you will see less then ideal efficiency and inconsistent offerings. My point is that when Renzo opened, they had many rough edges, but over time they have worked out the kinks and evolved into wonderful lunch spot. Today for example,  witnessed nearly a hundred covers – dine in and to-go combined – during the lunch rush. Everyone transaction, appeared to be handled with efficiency and a smile – urning out dozens of todays special plate (garlic shrimp with rice and salad – picture below), along with a variety of wraps, sandwiches and other entrees to happy customers.

The complimentary toasted corn nuts, bread basket with house made Peruvian Salsa and Inca Cola are icing on the cake.  Do check it out for lunch sometime soon, but do get there early so you can sit and watch the machine at work.

Good southern breakfast in Norfolk Virginia

Chicken fajita omelette with home fries was a hit (would suggest housemade biscuits over wheat toast).

Wonderfully small and cosy, only 7 or 8 tables. Reservations are most likely a must, thought I called only a few hours early and could nab an early table. Chef Paul Treacy cooks what he wants to cook and offers a choice between 2 menus, the traditional and surprise menu, both of which consist of several reasonably-sized courses. (Naturally he will substitute for allergies.) Therefore complete attention to detail and preparation. I did enjoy the traditional menu more. In any case, eating like this, “flights of food”, fits me well and is my favorite style of dining Food is at its freshest, innovative and simply tasty, service is impeccable and friendly. Wine pairing is very good, though your wine preferences can certainly be discussed. Jose, the maître d’, certainly accommodated me…I sampled 3 reds before I was happy…even though all were great! I just could not get me to agree with myself on taste.  I can’t drink too much and had to make do with 2 types of wine for all courses.

Every detail was a taste experience, from the unique green olive croquettes that came out first as a snack, the delicious hot, rustic breads of walnut and multi-grain, served with a special spice mixture and 2 oils: a house-made herb oil with 5 spices: red pepper, black pepper, sea salt and 2 more I still have not identified, and an intensely aromatic olive oil from Caceres.

I can’t even say which course was my favorite: maybe it was the sauteed foie with mushrooms and celery cream. Or the octopus accented with a green seaweed, sesame and Bonzouri sauce, a sauce of lemon, lime, bonito flakes and soy sauce. Come to think of it, that venison was out of this world, served with roast pumpkin, hazelnuts and truffle, and so was the seared tuna. Oh! And the salmon tartare with roast fig salad…

:-)

One of the desserts was a watermelon granita with coconut foam, served with an astonishing little flower from Sichuan, resembling that of a chamomile blossom. One is to hold the petals of this flower on their lips for 10 seconds, and then hold it on the tongue for some seconds, and then chew it. The resulting experience are tastes of metal, sweet, citrus, and electricity. It left parts of the mouth tingly and slightly numb. But each taste of the granita and foam came even more alive after that, like an intensity knob had been turned!

There were two more desserts, a small chocolate torte with melted chocolate in the middle, and after that petit-fours.

My only problem was that the dining area was cold…could be due to the fact the weather at this time was the coldest in 10 years.

Good to be back here again!

Mike and Patty’s was recommend to me awhile back, and my mouth was watering since. Adding frustration to the last trip by first showing up on a Monday, one of the two days a week they are closed.

This trip I made up for it by going twice in four days. They are best known for their Egg and Bacon Fancy which is simply a really good breakfast sandwich. I substituted the standard cheese cheese for Gruyere. Couldn’t be any better.

The second trip I ordered the Breafsst Torta with chorizo. I enjoyed it even more.

Located in a neighborhood on Church Street, near Boylston. With limited seating inside, I recommend to order and take away to eat in one of the two neighborhood parks.

They are open for breakfast and lunch everyday except for Monday and Tuesday.

I don’t understand why people rant about the Carnegie. Sure they don’t make everything perfect, but what shines are the meats and sandwiches. If you skip the Latkas (potato pancakes) and head right to the pastrami or brisket with a obligatory Dr Browns Black Cherry and you’ll be a happy camper.

PS: If you like blintzes, ask for them well done and you’ll be a happy diner.

Desert first. Life can be short.

This place is overwhelming, especially for a foodie. On my first visit, I headed straight for one of the several sit down restaurants housed in the venue. Which, as it turned out, was a perfect introduction to this food shrine.

Enjoyed a good late night meal at the (institution) Ebbitts Grill near the White House. They have one of the best bars in the city, and all the wait staff are professionals. On our recent evening, our server Tiffany, made a two star dinner into a three star by being personable, attentive and knowledgeable.

Go for the specials when ordering as they seem to strike a passion with the chef and can be extraordinary. The asparagus soup with house made croutons was a taste explosion, as was the Oyster Stew. The crab cakes, tortollinii, chili and peanut butter pie bistro de coin were good but not great.

Unless you are a fan of Cincinnati style chili, skip Clydes Chili.
